Indo-European Mythology 1

  1. List and discuss the major primary sources for the mythology of three Indo-European cultures, including their dates of origin and authorship (if known). Discuss any important factors that may cause problems in interpreting these sources, such as the existence of multiple revisions, or the presence of Christian or other outside influences in surviving texts. (minimum 300 words)

Comparative Ancient Ritual Styles

1. Compare and contrast the rituals from one Western and one Eastern Indo-European culture. What elements do they have in common, if any? In what ways are they different? (minimum 300 words)

Vedic:

In the Agniṣṭoma, or soma ritual, we can see to what extents the Vedic people went when it came to their rituals. This specific ritual lasted 3 days and was performed by and for a man of one of the three upper castes when they wanted to do something more than their daily or seasonal sacrifices (Drury 25).

Magic 1

1)      Discuss the importance of the action of the magico-religious function as it is seen within the context of general Indo-European culture. (minimum 100 words)

1) Translate the following liturgical phrases into your Hearth Culture language:

2) What do you consider to be the importance of using phrases in a hearth culture language other than Modern English (or your own native language) in ADF ritual? (Minimum 200 words)

There are two different sides to the argument for and against the use of a foreign language in ritual.

  1. Text Internalization: Describe internalizing text and concepts. Explain the difference between internalized and memorized text. What advantages or disadvantages does internalizing text have when compared to reading from a script? (100 words minimum)

Teaching Ritual Performance

1.Keep a journal of your work directing five rituals, at least two of which must be ADF High Day rituals and all of which must include five or more total celebrants who have been assigned parts. Submit an essay in which you describe how you directed the celebrants in the following ritual performance elements, and what you learned over the period you journaled. (600 words minimum for essay)
