Saturday, after a full day of training trailhead stewards, I headed up Baker in Saranac Lake. This is my second peak for the Saranac 6er challenge with St. Regis being my first.
For this peak to count, you have to start in the middle of town at Berkeley Green. This rule was added in a couple years ago because of the popularity of the challenge being more than the trailhead parking can handle, and with the trailhead in a residential area, that's an issue. So, started with a 1.3 mile flat road walk to the trailhead, and then hike up the peak. The marked trail is the right hand trail when you get to the trail junction, as it's designated by a yellow arrow, and eventually a few red disks. The trail itself is rather obvious, but poorly marked. It is also somewhat eroded, but not as bad as those in the high peaks. It is very steep and rocky, which reminded me of a high peak trail.
On the way up, I took the herd path (which actually had a red disk on it half way down) to the viewpoint just below the peak. Lovely views, and definitely more open of a view than at the peak. I could have bushwacked up to the trail, but considering I just taught LNT for an afternoon, I went back on the established herd path and then went up the trail to the peak. From there, I took what looks like it was the old trail back down. I didn't see a single marker on it, and I saw a couple abandoned section of trails, but it is obvious and it is well used. Got back to the road and did the 1.3 back to the car and got a good little workout before I drove the 2.5 hours home.
4 miles over 1.75 hours bringing me to 186 miles over 128 hours and 9.22 miles of elevation for the year.
